Sippin Some Haterade

“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.  If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.” (John 15:18-19, ESV)

Does the world hate you?  Jesus said the world will if you follow him.

John Piper said, “If we are not hated by someone, we don’t know enough people, or we don’t speak enough truth.”

So… are you hated by the unbelieving world?

If not, why is that?  Do you not leave your basement?  Do you not speak of the Gospel?  Do you not live any differently than the world?

People will hate you if you are living for Christ.  You will have critics. You will have haters.  You will be different.

Don’t listen to them.  Do what Nehemiah did, “I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?” (Nehemiah 6:3, ESV).

Don’t come down and stop the work you are doing for Christ.  Use the accusations as an indicator that you are doing something great.  No one bothers someone who doesn’t do anything.  Many will bother the man who is doing something great.

Reminds me of these words from William Barclay who comments on the conversion of the Apostle Paul … “He was so unanswerable that the Jews, helpless in debate, resorted to violence. No one persecutes a man who is ineffective. George Bernard Shaw once said that the biggest compliment you can pay an author is to burn his books. Someone else has said, ‘A wolf will never attack a painted sheep.’ Counterfeit Christianity is always safe; real Christianity is always in peril. To suffer persecution is to be paid the greatest of compliments because it is the certain proof that men think we really matter.”
